Nestled below the cool green hills, edged by a large tree-fringed lake and set amongst the upper reaches of the great Mahaweli River, looms the majestic citadel that is "Kandy". Situated 500 metres above sea level, it is still very much a focal point of Sri Lankan culture as it was the capital of the Kandyan kingdom and the seat of government for the last generation of Sri Lanka's sovereignty. Even since the fall of that ancient kingdom 190 years ago; this beautiful 'Garden City' has preserved most of its old-world charm.

The Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Tooth is one of the most striking features of Kandy. This temple is the repository of the Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. The original temple was built in 1592, and was subsequently built and rebuilt by a succession of Kings. The Pattirippuwa, the octangonal addition, provided a place from which the King could address his subjects on important occasions.
